Care & Maintenance
Looking after your home improvements
Whether you've invested in new windows and doors, a home extension, a conservatory conversion or a beautiful new garden room, a little regular maintenance can help keep everything looking its best for years to come.
At GL Prestige, we believe looking after your home should be straightforward. With a few simple checks and a little occasional cleaning, you can protect your investment and keep everything working as it should.
Keeping your windows and doors looking their best
Regular cleaning helps maintain the appearance and performance of your windows and doors.
We recommend cleaning glass every 3–6 months using warm soapy water or a suitable glass cleaner and a soft cloth. uPVC and foiled frames should be cleaned approximately every four months, while aluminium frames benefit from cleaning every 3–6 months.
Avoid abrasive cleaners, bleach, harsh solvents and pressure washers, which can damage surfaces, seals and finishes.
Caring for handles, locks and moving parts
Your windows and doors contain moving parts that benefit from occasional attention.
Keep handles, hinges, locks and tracks free from dirt and debris, and lubricate suitable moving parts once or twice a year using a manufacturer-recommended lubricant.
For patio and bi-fold doors, regularly vacuum the tracks and never force panels that become difficult to operate. Always use the designated handles when opening and closing bi-fold doors.
A little preventative maintenance can make a big difference to how smoothly everything operates.
Looking after your extension or garden room
A well-built extension or garden room is designed to provide years of enjoyment, but occasional maintenance will help preserve its appearance and condition.
Keep external cladding and finishes clean using methods suitable for the materials installed. Timber finishes may require periodic treatment, while composite cladding generally needs little more than routine cleaning.
Check external sealants, joints and visible finishes occasionally for signs of wear, and keep the surrounding ground and drainage areas clear to prevent water collecting against the building.
It's also worth checking that nearby plants and shrubs aren't growing against external walls or obstructing ventilation.
Conservatory roofs, roof lanterns and drainage
Whether you've had a conservatory roof conversion, a new extension or a garden room installed, keeping roof drainage clear is an important part of maintaining your space.
Leaves, moss and debris can build up in gutters and outlets, particularly during autumn and winter.
Check accessible drainage areas periodically and after severe weather. Avoid pressure washing roof glazing or placing weight on glass and polycarbonate surfaces.
Where cleaning or inspection involves working at height, always use a suitably qualified professional.
Ventilation and condensation
Good ventilation plays an important role in keeping your home comfortable and helping to prevent moisture-related problems.
Whether it's a new extension, garden room or existing living space, regularly ventilating rooms and using extractor fans where appropriate can help reduce excess moisture.
You may occasionally notice condensation on the outside of your windows, particularly on cold, clear mornings. This is usually nothing to worry about and can actually indicate that your energy-efficient glazing is reducing heat loss.
However, persistent condensation inside your home may suggest that ventilation or humidity levels need attention.
A little maintenance goes a long way
You don't need to spend hours maintaining your home improvements. A few simple checks throughout the year can help prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems.
Every few months, clean your windows and frames, check door tracks and drainage holes, and inspect accessible external finishes.
Once or twice a year, check hinges and locking mechanisms, inspect gutters and roof drainage, and look for signs of wear around sealants and external materials.
Always follow the specific care instructions supplied with your products, as maintenance requirements can vary depending on the materials and finishes used.
